The Garnet represents primordial fire, the creation of the world out of chaos, purification and love. It is a
stone of strong, intense feelings.
When asked what colour is garnet, most people would say red. This is very far from reality. One of
nature’s miracles are the incredible vast array of colours that Garnets can posses, which is unparalleled in
any gemstone accept Tourmaline. The only colour Garnet has not been found in is the colour blue.
The name “Garnet” originates from the medieval Latin Granatus, meaning “pomegranate”, in reference to
the similarity of the red colour.

Garnets have been used since the Bronze Age as gemstones and abrasives.
According to the ancient Jewish text the Talmud, a Garnet provided the only source of light on Noah’s
Ark.

In medieval times, gems like Garnet were also thought to be remedies for inflammatory diseases and to
soothe the angry heart
As a Warrior’s Stone, Garnet served as a talisman in the Crusades for both the Christians and Muslims.
In earlier times, garnets were exchanged as gifts between friends to demonstrate their affection for each
other and to insure that they would meet again.
Necklaces studded with red garnets adorned the pharaohs of ancient Egypt.
Signet rings in ancient Rome featured carved Garnet cabochons that were used to stamp the wax that
secured important documents.

Garnets come from many different regions and countries. Bohemia was the primary source of the red
Garnets so popular during Victorian times. In 19th-century Russia, green Garnets from the Ural
Mountains were prized by the Russian royal family and used by the great jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé
(1846–1920).
For many years, Southern California’s Little Three mining area was known for producing sources of a
spellbinding rich orange-to-yellow Garnet.
