Silver Highland Cow Studs

Bonny Silver Highland Cow Studs (or Heilan Coos as we call them in Scotland!)

Our Silver (or Bronze) Coos are one of our favourite things to make and every one has it’s very own personality, because we make them one shaggy hair at a time!

These wee chaps are approx 1.5 cm tall and have sterling silver pins and backs.

We make these as pins and pendants too! Please see our other listings.

More Information

We make our Silver and Bronze Item using a substance called Metal Clay. Which consists of very fine, recycled, metal particles mixed with an organic binder. This makes a material that looks and feels much like pottery clay.

We create our design in the magic clay and when it is completely dry it’s fired in a kiln. The temperature needed for firing is over 800 degrees Celsius!  This causes the binder to burn away and the metal particles to fuse together. The result is a new piece of metal in whatever shape we happen to have sculpted or moulded it.

To sell any piece of Silver, over a weight of 7.78 grams, legally in the UK, it has to be tested and Hallmarked by an official Assay Office. We are registered with the Edinburgh Assay Office, so our heavier creations bear our personal Hallmark.

The most widely recognised form of silver is Sterling Silver which is 925 parts silver in 1000.  The other 75 parts are cooper, which is added to give the metal more strength. So the chains, earring wires and other findings that we use are Sterling Silver, purchased from UK companies.
However our own handmade elements are of a purer quality, being .999 or .960 Silver.
